Effect of Dividend Payment Policies on Insurance Company Retained Surplus

Abstract

Dividend payment policies are important financial decisions for insurance companies because they determine the proportion of profits distributed to shareholders and the amount retained within the business. Retained surplus provides insurers with financial resources that can support capital growth, business expansion, claims absorption, investment activities, and other operational requirements. Changes in dividend payments can therefore influence the level of surplus available to support the financial strength and long-term obligations of insurance companies. This study examines the effect of dividend payment policies on insurance company retained surplus. The study will investigate how dividend distribution decisions influence the accumulation and movement of retained surplus over time. Particular attention will be given to dividend payout ratios, dividend amounts, retained earnings, profitability, capital requirements, and the financial resources available to insurers after dividend distributions. The study will consider factors such as dividend payout ratios, profit after tax, retained earnings, capital adequacy, investment income, underwriting performance, claims expenses, and shareholders' returns. Financial and actuarial analysis techniques will be applied to examine the relationship between dividend payments and retained surplus. Comparative analysis will also be used to assess variations in retained surplus under different dividend distribution patterns. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant financial statements and annual reports of selected insurance companies will be analysed using descriptive statistics, financial ratios, trend analysis, correlation analysis, and regression techniques. Measures of dividend payout and retained surplus will be examined over the selected study period to determine the extent to which dividend payment policies are associated with changes in retained surplus. The study is expected to reveal that higher dividend payouts may reduce the amount of profit retained by insurance companies, thereby limiting the growth of retained surplus. Conversely, lower dividend distributions may allow insurers to retain a larger proportion of earnings for capital accumulation, investment, and business expansion. The magnitude of the effect is expected to vary according to profitability, capital requirements, claims experience, investment performance, and the financial structure of individual insurers. The findings of the study may provide useful information to insurance companies, actuaries, financial managers, shareholders, regulators, investors, and other stakeholders. Understanding the relationship between dividend payment policies and retained surplus can support more informed capital management, dividend planning, financial stability assessment, and investment decisions. The study may also assist insurers in balancing shareholder distributions with the need to maintain adequate financial resources for future obligations. The study concludes that dividend payment policies can influence insurance company retained surplus because distributions to shareholders directly affect the proportion of earnings retained within the business. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies consider profitability, capital requirements, claims obligations, investment needs, and long-term financial objectives when determining dividend payment levels to maintain an appropriate balance between shareholder distributions and retained surplus accumulation.
