Effect of Farm Production Areas on Agricultural Insurance Exposure

Abstract

Farm production areas represent the geographical locations in which agricultural activities are carried out and may differ in terms of climate, soil conditions, rainfall patterns, farming practices, and exposure to agricultural risks. These differences can influence the likelihood and potential magnitude of losses experienced by farmers. Agricultural insurance exposure is therefore partly dependent on the characteristics and distribution of farm production areas covered by insurance schemes. This study will examine the effect of farm production areas on agricultural insurance exposure. It will assess whether differences in the geographical areas where farming activities occur are associated with variations in the level of insurance exposure. The study will also examine how the distribution and characteristics of farm production areas may influence the assessment of agricultural risks and potential insurance liabilities. The study will focus on farm production areas and agricultural insurance exposure, considering factors such as geographical location, cultivated land area, crop types, production volume, weather conditions, and historical loss experience. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to examine variations in insurance exposure across different production areas. The study will also consider how differences in the concentration and size of insured farming areas may affect the potential frequency and severity of agricultural insurance losses. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant agricultural production and insurance exposure data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression techniques, geographical comparisons, and appropriate actuarial methods. Farm production areas may be grouped according to relevant geographical or production characteristics to examine differences in insurance exposure levels. The analysis will provide empirical evidence on the relationship between production areas and agricultural insurance exposure. The study is expected to reveal that differences in farm production areas may have a significant effect on agricultural insurance exposure. Areas with larger cultivated land, higher production volumes, or greater concentration of insured farms may generate higher levels of insurance exposure. Differences in environmental and production conditions may also produce variations in the potential frequency and magnitude of insured agricultural losses. The study will be useful to agricultural insurance companies, actuaries, farmers, agricultural policymakers, regulators, and researchers. It may assist insurers in identifying variations in exposure across production areas and improving agricultural risk assessment, portfolio management, and insurance planning. The findings may also support better allocation of insurance resources and development of coverage structures that reflect differences in agricultural production areas. The study concludes that farm production areas can influence agricultural insurance exposure through differences in geographical concentration, production scale, crop characteristics, and underlying agricultural risks. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate reliable information on farm production areas into exposure measurement and actuarial risk assessment to improve the management and sustainability of agricultural insurance portfolios.
