Effect of Foreign Investment Exposure on Insurance Portfolio Risk

Abstract

The study examines the effect of foreign investment exposure on insurance portfolio risk, with emphasis on how investments in foreign financial markets and assets may influence the risk profile and performance of insurance investment portfolios. Insurance companies may invest in foreign securities and other international assets to diversify their portfolios, access broader investment opportunities, and improve potential returns. However, foreign investment exposure may also introduce additional risks arising from exchange rate movements, international market volatility, political developments, and differences in economic conditions. The study will investigate the extent to which foreign investment exposure affects the risk level of insurance investment portfolios. Attention will be given to the proportion of insurance assets invested in foreign equities, government securities, corporate bonds, foreign deposits, international funds, and other overseas financial instruments. The study will assess whether variations in the level of foreign investment exposure are associated with changes in portfolio volatility, investment returns, and overall risk. The study will further examine the major factors through which foreign investments may influence insurance portfolio risk. These factors will include exchange rate fluctuations, foreign interest rate movements, international stock market performance, inflation differentials, political and economic instability, and changes in global financial conditions. Measures such as foreign asset ratios, portfolio standard deviation, value-at-risk, investment returns, exchange rate exposure, and risk-adjusted performance will be considered in evaluating the relationship between foreign investment exposure and portfolio risk. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be obtained from insurance companies’ annual reports, financial statements, investment portfolios, regulatory publications, and relevant international financial market data. Descriptive statistics, trend analysis, portfolio risk measures, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be employed to determine the effect of foreign investment exposure on insurance portfolio risk. The study is expected to reveal that foreign investment exposure may have both diversification benefits and additional risk implications for insurance companies. Moderate exposure to foreign assets may reduce portfolio concentration and provide access to investment opportunities with different risk-return characteristics. However, excessive exposure may increase portfolio volatility due to exchange rate movements, international market fluctuations, and other external economic risks. The findings are expected to provide useful information for insurance companies, investment managers, actuarial professionals, and regulators on the management of foreign investment exposure. The study may assist insurers in determining appropriate levels of international asset allocation, managing currency and market risks, and improving portfolio diversification. It may also contribute to better investment decision-making by highlighting the importance of considering both the benefits and risks associated with international investments. The study concludes that foreign investment exposure can significantly influence the risk characteristics of insurance investment portfolios and should therefore be carefully managed. It is recommended that insurance companies establish appropriate limits for foreign investments, monitor exchange rate and international market risks, and regularly assess the contribution of foreign assets to overall portfolio risk and return. Effective diversification, currency risk management, and periodic portfolio reviews should be encouraged to maintain a balanced and resilient insurance investment portfolio.
