Effect of Group Benefit Limits on Group Life Insurance Premium Valuation
Abstract
Group life insurance provides financial protection to members of an employee or association-based group by providing specified benefits upon the occurrence of insured events. Benefit limits determine the maximum amount payable under the policy and are an important consideration in estimating the expected cost of coverage. Appropriate valuation of group life insurance premiums therefore requires careful consideration of benefit limits and the underlying demographic and financial characteristics of the insured group. This study will examine the effect of group benefit limits on group life insurance premium valuation. It will assess how variations in the maximum benefits payable to group members influence the actuarial value of premiums required to provide adequate coverage. The study will also examine the relationship between benefit limits and the expected future benefit payments arising from insured mortality risks. The study will focus on group benefit limits, number of insured members, age distribution, mortality assumptions, policy duration, benefit amounts, interest rate assumptions, and premium values. Actuarial valuation techniques will be used to estimate expected claims and determine the present value of future benefit obligations under different benefit-limit structures. The study will compare premium valuations across alternative benefit levels while maintaining other relevant assumptions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data relating to group membership, age distribution, mortality experience, benefit amounts, policy duration, and premium payments will be analysed using descriptive statistics, life table functions, actuarial present value techniques, mortality-based calculations, and scenario analysis. Different group benefit limits will be modelled to determine their corresponding effects on expected claims and premium valuation. The study is expected to reveal that changes in group benefit limits may significantly influence group life insurance premium valuations. Higher benefit limits may increase expected benefit payments and consequently require higher actuarially determined premiums. The extent of the effect may vary according to the age composition of the insured group, mortality assumptions, policy duration, group size, and applicable interest rate assumptions. The study will be useful to actuaries, group life insurers, employers, insurance underwriters, pension and employee-benefit administrators, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for determining appropriate premium levels and designing group life insurance arrangements that reflect the financial obligations associated with different benefit limits. The findings may also support improved liability estimation and premium adequacy. The study concludes that group benefit limits constitute an important consideration in the actuarial valuation of group life insurance premiums. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate appropriate benefit limits, mortality assumptions, demographic characteristics, and financial assumptions when determining premiums for group life insurance schemes.
