Effect of Guaranteed Interest Rates on Participating Life Insurance Values

Abstract

Participating life insurance policies provide policyholders with guaranteed benefits together with potential additional benefits arising from the performance of the participating fund. Guaranteed interest rates are an important component of these contracts because they establish a minimum level of interest credited or guaranteed within the policy. Changes in guaranteed interest rates can influence policy values, future benefit payments, and the financial obligations associated with participating life insurance products. This study will examine the effect of guaranteed interest rates on participating life insurance values. It will assess how variations in guaranteed interest rates influence the value of participating life insurance policies and determine how different guaranteed rates affect projected policy benefits and insurer liabilities. The study will also examine the interaction between guaranteed rates and the accumulation of policy values over the contract duration. The study will focus on guaranteed interest rates, participating life insurance, policy values, guaranteed benefits, participating funds, policyholder benefits, insurer liabilities, investment returns, policy duration, mortality assumptions, and actuarial valuation. Actuarial valuation and accumulation techniques will be applied to estimate policy values under alternative guaranteed interest rate assumptions. Different interest rate scenarios will be considered to determine their effects on future policy benefits and contract values. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant policy data, guaranteed interest rates, premium payments, policy durations, benefit structures, investment return assumptions, mortality information, and projected cash flows will be analysed using actuarial valuation techniques, compound accumulation methods, present value calculations, sensitivity analysis, and scenario modelling. Alternative guaranteed interest rate assumptions will be applied to determine their effects on participating life insurance values. The study is expected to reveal that changes in guaranteed interest rates may have a significant effect on participating life insurance values. Higher guaranteed interest rates may increase the accumulation of policy values and expected future benefits, while lower guaranteed rates may result in lower projected policy values. The magnitude of the effect may depend on premium levels, policy duration, investment returns, benefit structures, mortality assumptions, and the timing of policy cash flows. The study will be useful to life insurance companies, actuaries, policyholders, financial analysts, regulators, risk managers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for designing participating life insurance products, assessing guaranteed benefit obligations, evaluating policy values, and improving the management of interest rate and investment-related risks associated with participating policies. The study concludes that guaranteed interest rates are important determinants of participating life insurance values because they influence the accumulation of policy benefits and the financial obligations of insurers. It is therefore recommended that insurers carefully evaluate guaranteed interest rate assumptions, investment return expectations, policy duration, benefit structures, and relevant actuarial factors when valuing participating life insurance contracts.
