Effect of Historical Loss Weighting Methods on Actuarial Premium Estimates
Abstract
Historical loss weighting methods refer to the approaches used by actuaries to assign different levels of importance to past loss experience when estimating future insurance losses and premiums. Historical claims experience provides an important basis for actuarial pricing, but losses from different periods may not have equal relevance because of changes in exposure, claims conditions, inflation, and other factors. The method used to weight historical losses may therefore influence the accuracy and level of actuarial premium estimates. This study will examine the effect of historical loss weighting methods on actuarial premium estimates. It will assess how alternative approaches to weighting past loss experience influence estimated expected losses and the resulting insurance premiums. The study will also compare premium estimates obtained using different historical loss weighting methods to determine the extent to which weighting choices affect actuarial pricing outcomes. The study will focus on historical loss weighting methods, actuarial premium estimates, historical claims experience, expected losses, loss experience, premium rating, claims frequency, claim severity, exposure changes, and actuarial pricing models. Different weighting approaches will be applied to historical loss data to evaluate how variations in the importance assigned to past observations affect projected losses and premium estimates. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance claims, exposure, and premium data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, loss experience analysis, weighted average methods, trend analysis, actuarial premium calculations, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative historical loss weighting methods will be applied to the same data to assess their effects on estimated expected losses and actuarial premium levels. The study is expected to reveal that historical loss weighting methods may have a significant effect on actuarial premium estimates. Methods that assign greater importance to recent loss experience may produce different premium estimates from methods that give relatively similar weights to observations across several historical periods. The magnitude of the effect may depend on claims volatility, historical loss trends, exposure changes, claim frequency, claim severity, and the length of the experience period considered. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, pricing analysts, underwriters, risk managers, financial analysts, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for selecting appropriate historical loss weighting techniques, improving premium estimation, evaluating pricing assumptions, and strengthening actuarial risk assessment. The findings may also assist insurers in understanding the sensitivity of premium estimates to different approaches for incorporating historical loss experience. The study concludes that historical loss weighting methods are important considerations in actuarial premium estimation because different weighting approaches can produce different assessments of future insurance losses. It is therefore recommended that insurers evaluate alternative weighting methods, consider relevant historical loss patterns, and conduct sensitivity analysis when determining appropriate actuarial premium estimates.
