Effect of Insurance Policy Wordings on Expected Coverage Costs
Abstract
Insurance policy wordings contain the terms, conditions, definitions, limitations, exclusions, and obligations that determine the scope of protection provided under an insurance contract. The wording of a policy can influence how insured risks are defined, the circumstances under which claims become payable, and the extent of financial obligations assumed by insurers. Differences in policy wordings may therefore affect the expected costs associated with providing insurance coverage and the actuarial assessment of potential claims. This study will examine the effect of insurance policy wordings on expected coverage costs. It will assess how variations in policy terms and contractual provisions influence the expected financial costs associated with insurance coverage. The study will also compare expected coverage costs under different policy wording structures and determine how specific contractual provisions affect expected claims and overall insurance cost estimates. The study will focus on insurance policy wordings, expected coverage costs, policy terms, insurance coverage, policy conditions, exclusions, coverage limits, deductibles, claim obligations, expected claims, loss exposure, premium estimation, and actuarial analysis. Relevant policy and claims data will be examined to identify relationships between contractual provisions and expected coverage costs. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be used to evaluate the financial implications of different policy wording structures. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data relating to policy wordings, coverage limits, deductibles, exclusions, claims, claim frequency, claim severity, insured exposures, and premium amounts will be analysed using descriptive statistics, policy provision analysis, claims frequency and severity analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative policy wording scenarios will also be assessed to determine their effects on expected coverage costs. The study is expected to reveal that insurance policy wordings may have a significant effect on expected coverage costs. Policy provisions that broaden the scope of coverage may increase the range of losses for which insurers may become liable, potentially resulting in higher expected coverage costs, while restrictive provisions may reduce the range of covered losses. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the nature of the insured risk, policy conditions, exclusions, coverage limits, deductibles, claim frequency, claim severity, and prevailing loss experience. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, underwriters, claims managers, insurance brokers, pricing analysts, risk managers, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for evaluating policy structures, improving premium estimation, assessing expected claims liabilities, reviewing contractual provisions, and strengthening actuarial analysis of insurance coverage costs. The study concludes that insurance policy wordings are important considerations in determining expected coverage costs because contractual provisions define the risks and losses that may give rise to insurer obligations. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly review policy wordings, ensure that actuarial pricing models accurately reflect contractual provisions, assess the financial implications of coverage changes, and conduct sensitivity analysis when evaluating expected coverage costs.
