Effect of Interest Rate Changes on Insurance Investment Income

Abstract

Insurance companies invest a significant portion of their funds in financial assets to generate investment income and support their long-term financial obligations. Interest rates are an important economic factor influencing the returns earned from interest-sensitive investments such as government securities, bonds, and other fixed-income instruments. Changes in interest rates can therefore affect the level and stability of investment income generated by insurance companies. The study examines the effect of interest rate changes on insurance investment income. It will assess the relationship between movements in interest rates and the investment income earned by insurance companies over a specified period. The study will focus on changes in prevailing interest rates and variations in investment income generated from interest-bearing financial assets. The study will further analyse how rising and falling interest rate conditions affect insurance investment returns. Historical interest rate movements, investment income, portfolio composition, and returns from selected asset classes will be examined. Attention will also be given to the sensitivity of insurance investment income to changes in interest rate conditions and the implications for investment performance. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical data on interest rates, insurance investment income, and relevant investment portfolios will be obtained from selected insurance companies and appropriate financial sources. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, trend analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to determine the effect of interest rate changes on insurance investment income. The study is expected to reveal that changes in interest rates have a measurable effect on insurance investment income. Rising interest rates may increase income from newly invested interest-bearing assets, while declining rates may reduce the returns available from such investments. The findings may also indicate that the effect of interest rate changes varies according to the maturity structure and composition of insurance investment portfolios. The study will provide useful information to actuaries, insurance investment managers, financial analysts, and insurance company management. The findings may support better investment planning, interest rate risk assessment, and portfolio management decisions. The study may also assist insurers in evaluating the potential effects of changing interest rate conditions on investment income and overall financial performance. The study concludes that interest rate movements are an important factor in determining insurance investment income and should be carefully considered in investment planning. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies regularly monitor interest rate trends, assess the sensitivity of investment portfolios to rate changes, and adopt appropriate investment management strategies. Effective management of interest rate exposure may improve investment income stability and support the financial sustainability of insurance operations.
