Effect of Longevity Risk on Pension Annuity Cash Flow Projections
Abstract
Longevity risk refers to the possibility that pension annuity beneficiaries live longer than anticipated, resulting in benefit payments continuing for a longer period than initially projected. This risk is an important consideration in pension annuity management because extended payment periods can increase the amount and duration of future cash outflows. Accurate assessment of longevity risk is therefore important for reliable pension annuity cash flow projections and effective long-term financial planning. This study will examine the effect of longevity risk on pension annuity cash flow projections. It will assess how changes in life expectancy and survival patterns influence the timing, duration, and expected value of future annuity payments. The study will also examine how improvements in longevity assumptions affect projected pension cash flows over different retirement periods. The study will focus on longevity risk, pension annuities, life expectancy, survival probabilities, mortality assumptions, annuity payments, retirement age, payment duration, interest rates, and projected cash flows. Actuarial life tables and survival models will be applied to estimate expected annuity payment periods under alternative longevity assumptions. Different mortality and longevity scenarios will be examined to determine their effects on projected pension annuity cash flows. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant mortality data, life expectancy information, pension annuity values, retirement ages, payment frequencies, interest rate assumptions, and beneficiary survival probabilities will be analysed using actuarial valuation techniques, life table functions, cash flow projection methods, sensitivity analysis, and scenario modelling. Alternative longevity assumptions will be applied to determine their effects on the timing and value of future pension annuity payments. The study is expected to reveal that increases in longevity may result in longer periods of pension annuity payments and consequently higher projected cumulative cash outflows. Improvements in survival probabilities may extend the duration of annuity liabilities, while changes in retirement age, interest rates, payment frequency, and mortality assumptions may also influence the projected cash flow pattern. The study will be useful to pension fund managers, actuaries, insurance companies, pension administrators, retirees, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving the projection of future annuity cash flows, assessing longevity-related financial exposure, planning pension fund resources, and developing appropriate strategies for managing long-term pension payment obligations. The study concludes that longevity risk is an important factor in pension annuity cash flow projections because changes in survival patterns can substantially affect the duration and value of future benefit payments. It is therefore recommended that pension and insurance institutions regularly update mortality and longevity assumptions and apply appropriate actuarial models and scenario analysis when projecting pension annuity cash flows.
