Effect of Loss Development Factor Selection on Claims Reserve Estimates
Abstract
Loss development factors are important actuarial measures used to estimate how reported or paid insurance claims may develop from an initial period to their ultimate values. The selection of appropriate loss development factors is therefore essential in claims reserving because these factors influence the projection of future claim payments and outstanding claims liabilities. Differences in the factors selected may consequently produce variations in estimated claims reserves. This study will examine the effect of loss development factor selection on claims reserve estimates. It will assess how alternative loss development factors influence the estimation of ultimate claims and outstanding claims reserves. The study will also examine the extent to which differences in selected development factors produce variations in reserve estimates across different periods of claims development. The study will focus on loss development factor selection, claims reserve estimates, claims development, ultimate claims, outstanding claims liabilities, paid claims, reported claims, actuarial reserving, claims triangles, and reserve adequacy. Historical claims development data will be used to derive alternative loss development factors and apply them to outstanding claims. The resulting reserve estimates will then be compared to determine the implications of different factor selection approaches. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance claims data will be analysed using claims development triangles, cumulative development factors, loss development techniques, chain-ladder methods, descriptive statistics, and sensitivity analysis. Reserve estimates generated under different loss development factor selections will be compared to identify variations in projected ultimate claims and outstanding liabilities. The study is expected to reveal that loss development factor selection may have a significant effect on claims reserve estimates. Factors based on different historical development patterns may produce variations in projected ultimate claims and outstanding liabilities. The magnitude of these differences may depend on the stability of claims development patterns, the quality of historical claims data, the selected development periods, and changes in claims settlement behaviour. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, claims managers, financial analysts, regulators, auditors, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving loss development factor selection, strengthening claims reserving practices, evaluating reserve adequacy, and managing uncertainty in outstanding claims estimates. The findings may also assist insurers in assessing the sensitivity of reserves to alternative development assumptions. The study concludes that loss development factor selection is an important component of actuarial claims reserving because the factors applied to historical claims development experience can influence estimates of ultimate claims and outstanding liabilities. It is therefore recommended that insurers and actuaries carefully evaluate historical development patterns, data quality, and changes in claims experience when selecting loss development factors for claims reserve estimation.
