Effect of Mortality Improvements on Life Insurance Liability Estimates

Abstract

Life insurance liability estimation is an important actuarial process used to determine the amount an insurer may need to provide for future benefit payments arising from life insurance contracts. Mortality assumptions play a central role in this process because the timing and probability of death benefits affect the expected value of future insurance obligations. Improvements in mortality rates can therefore alter the projected pattern and value of life insurance liabilities over time. The study examines the effect of mortality improvements on life insurance liability estimates. It will assess how reductions in mortality rates and corresponding increases in survival probabilities influence the estimated value of future life insurance obligations. The study will focus on mortality improvement rates, survival probabilities, policyholder age, policy duration, benefit payments, and interest rate assumptions used in liability valuation. The study will further model life insurance liabilities under alternative mortality assumptions. Historical mortality data will be analysed to identify patterns of mortality improvement, while actuarial present value techniques will be used to estimate future liabilities under different mortality scenarios. Sensitivity analysis will also be applied to determine the extent to which changes in mortality assumptions affect liability estimates across different ages and policy durations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant mortality and life insurance data will be obtained from appropriate actuarial and demographic sources. Life table techniques, mortality improvement models, actuarial present value calculations, descriptive statistics, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be employed to evaluate the effect of mortality improvements on life insurance liability estimates. The study is expected to reveal that mortality improvements can produce measurable changes in life insurance liability estimates. Increased survival rates may alter the timing and probability of future benefit payments, with the effect varying according to the type of life insurance contract and the age and duration of the policies. The findings may also indicate that long-term contracts are particularly sensitive to persistent changes in mortality assumptions. The study will provide useful information to actuaries, life insurance companies, insurance regulators, and financial analysts involved in liability valuation and risk management. The findings may support improved mortality assumption setting, more accurate estimation of future insurance obligations, and better assessment of longevity-related changes in life insurance portfolios. The study may also contribute to improved financial planning and actuarial reserve management. The study concludes that mortality improvements are an important consideration in estimating life insurance liabilities because changes in survival patterns can influence the timing and value of future benefit payments. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly review mortality assumptions and incorporate appropriate mortality improvement factors into actuarial liability models. Continuous monitoring of mortality experience may improve liability estimation, reserve adequacy, and the financial management of long-term life insurance obligations.
