Effect of Occupational Injury Severity on Workers’ Compensation Reserves
Abstract
Workers’ compensation insurance provides financial protection against employment-related injuries and occupational accidents by covering eligible medical expenses, compensation payments, rehabilitation costs, and other related benefits. The severity of occupational injuries can influence the size and duration of compensation payments and consequently affect the liabilities that insurers are required to reserve. Accurate assessment of injury severity is therefore important for estimating adequate workers’ compensation reserves. This study will examine the effect of occupational injury severity on workers’ compensation reserves. It will assess how variations in the severity of workplace injuries influence the level of reserves required to meet future compensation obligations. The study will also examine differences in expected claim costs associated with minor, moderate, and severe occupational injuries. The study will focus on occupational injury severity, workers’ compensation reserves, claim costs, medical expenses, compensation payments, claim duration, rehabilitation expenses, claim frequency, and outstanding liabilities. Actuarial techniques will be applied to estimate the expected future cost of workers’ compensation claims under different injury-severity levels. Loss development and reserve estimation methods will also be considered in assessing the financial implications of injury severity. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant workers’ compensation claims data, injury classifications, claim amounts, medical expenses, settlement payments, claim durations, and reserve records will be analysed using descriptive statistics, claim severity analysis, regression techniques, loss development methods, and actuarial reserving techniques. Different injury-severity categories will be compared to determine their effects on estimated workers’ compensation reserves. The study is expected to reveal that higher occupational injury severity may result in higher workers’ compensation reserves. Severe injuries may generate larger medical and compensation payments, longer claim durations, and greater outstanding liabilities than less severe injuries. The magnitude of the effect may vary according to the nature of the injury, treatment costs, duration of compensation, and historical claims development patterns. The study will be useful to actuaries, workers’ compensation insurers, employers, underwriters, claims managers, insurance regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving the estimation of outstanding workers’ compensation liabilities and strengthening reserving practices. The findings may also support better claims management, financial planning, risk assessment, and reserve adequacy. The study concludes that occupational injury severity is an important factor in determining workers’ compensation reserve requirements. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate reliable injury-severity classifications, claims development experience, medical costs, compensation payments, and appropriate actuarial reserving techniques when estimating workers’ compensation reserves.
