Effect of Policy Cohort Analysis on Life Insurance Liability Estimation
Abstract
Policy cohort analysis involves grouping life insurance policies according to common characteristics such as year of issue, policy duration, entry period, or other defined periods in order to examine their experience and financial development. In life insurance, policies issued during different periods may exhibit variations in mortality experience, premium payments, lapses, and benefit payments. Analysing policies by cohort can therefore provide useful information for estimating the future liabilities associated with different groups of policies. The study examines the effect of policy cohort analysis on life insurance liability estimation. It will assess how grouping policies into distinct cohorts influences the estimation of expected future insurance obligations. The study will also examine differences in liability values across policy cohorts and determine how cohort-specific experience can contribute to more detailed actuarial liability estimates. The study will focus on policy cohort analysis, life insurance liability estimation, policy issue year, policy duration, mortality experience, premium payments, policy benefits, lapses, actuarial liabilities, and expected future cash flows. Historical life insurance policy data will be classified into relevant cohorts and analysed to identify differences in policy experience and liability development. Actuarial valuation techniques will be applied to estimate the financial obligations associated with each cohort. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be obtained from life insurance policy records, premium payment histories, claims and benefit payments, policy duration information, lapse records, mortality assumptions, and actuarial liability estimates. Descriptive statistics, cohort analysis, actuarial present value calculations, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to examine variations in liability estimates across policy cohorts. The study is expected to reveal that policy cohort analysis has a measurable effect on life insurance liability estimation. Cohorts established from different policy periods may produce different liability patterns because of variations in policy duration, mortality experience, premium payment behaviour, and benefit structures. The study may also show that cohort-based analysis provides a more detailed understanding of liability development than treating the entire policy portfolio as a single homogeneous group. The findings are expected to be useful to actuaries, life insurance companies, underwriters, policy administrators, regulators, and researchers. Applying cohort analysis can support more detailed liability measurement, reserve assessment, financial planning, and monitoring of policy experience. The findings may also assist insurers in identifying variations in liability development across groups of policies and improving the assumptions used in actuarial valuation. The study concludes that policy cohort analysis is a useful approach for improving the estimation of life insurance liabilities by providing a structured assessment of policy groups with similar characteristics. It is therefore recommended that insurers and actuaries incorporate appropriate cohort classifications into liability analysis where sufficient historical data are available. Regular comparison of cohort experience may improve the accuracy of liability estimates and support effective management of long-term life insurance obligations.
