Effect of Policy Fund Withdrawal Charges on Unit-Linked Contract Values
Abstract
Policy fund withdrawal charges are fees imposed when policyholders withdraw part or all of the accumulated funds from unit-linked insurance contracts. These charges are generally deducted from the policyholder's fund value and can therefore affect the amount available to the policyholder after withdrawal. Understanding the effect of withdrawal charges is important in assessing the financial value and performance of unit-linked insurance contracts. This study will examine the effect of policy fund withdrawal charges on unit-linked contract values. It will assess how variations in withdrawal charge levels influence the value of funds available to policyholders following partial or complete withdrawals. The study will also compare contract values under different withdrawal charge structures to determine the extent to which charges affect accumulated policyholder funds. The study will focus on policy fund withdrawal charges, unit-linked contract values, policyholder funds, partial withdrawals, full withdrawals, investment returns, unit prices, accumulated values, policy charges, premium contributions, fund performance, policy duration, actuarial valuation, and unit-linked insurance contracts. Actuarial and financial modelling techniques will be applied to evaluate changes in contract values under alternative withdrawal charge assumptions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant fund values, withdrawal amounts, withdrawal charges, premium contributions, investment returns, unit prices, policy durations, and withdrawal frequencies will be analysed using actuarial and financial valuation techniques. Descriptive analysis, comparative analysis, fund value calculations, sensitivity analysis, and mathematical modelling will be used to determine differences in unit-linked contract values associated with varying withdrawal charge levels. The study is expected to reveal that policy fund withdrawal charges may have a significant effect on unit-linked contract values. Higher withdrawal charges are expected to reduce the amount remaining in the policyholder's fund after withdrawal, while lower charges may result in larger residual contract values. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the level and structure of the charge, withdrawal amount, withdrawal frequency, investment performance, premium contributions, policy duration, and timing of withdrawals. The study will be useful to actuaries, life insurance companies, investment managers, policyholders, financial advisers, underwriters, regulators, researchers, and students of actuarial science. It may provide useful information for designing withdrawal charge structures, evaluating unit-linked policy values, managing policyholder funds, assessing product features, and improving transparency in unit-linked insurance contracts. The study concludes that policy fund withdrawal charges are important considerations in determining unit-linked contract values because deductions made from accumulated funds can directly affect the value retained by policyholders. It is therefore recommended that insurers carefully evaluate withdrawal charge structures and their effects on policyholder fund values when designing, pricing, and managing unit-linked insurance products.
