Effect of Policy Renewal Intervals on General Insurance Risk Estimates
Abstract
Policy renewal intervals refer to the periods between successive renewals of general insurance policies. The length and timing of these intervals can influence the amount of exposure insurers assume, the availability of updated policyholder information, and the frequency with which insurance risks are reassessed. Understanding renewal intervals is therefore important for accurate estimation of general insurance risk and effective management of insurance portfolios. This study will examine the effect of policy renewal intervals on general insurance risk estimates. It will assess how differences in the duration between policy renewals influence the estimation of expected claims, loss experience, and overall insurance risk. The study will also examine the relationship between renewal intervals, policy exposure, claim frequency, claim severity, premium levels, and projected risk estimates. The study will focus on policy renewal intervals, general insurance risk estimates, policy exposure, claim frequency, claim severity, premium rates, policy duration, renewal patterns, loss experience, and expected claims. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to evaluate how different renewal intervals influence risk estimation. Comparative and sensitivity analyses will also be used to assess changes in risk estimates under alternative renewal interval assumptions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical general insurance policy, renewal, claims, exposure, premium, and loss data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, renewal interval analysis, claim frequency and severity analysis, loss ratio analysis, actuarial risk estimation, comparative analysis, scenario analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Different policy renewal intervals will be evaluated to determine their effects on projected general insurance risk estimates. The study is expected to reveal that policy renewal intervals may have a significant effect on general insurance risk estimates. Shorter renewal intervals may provide more frequent opportunities for reassessing policy exposure and updating risk information, while longer intervals may result in risk estimates being based on information that is less frequently updated. The magnitude of the effect may depend on changes in exposure, claim frequency, claim severity, policy characteristics, renewal patterns, and the stability of historical loss experience. The study will be useful to actuaries, general insurance companies, underwriters, pricing analysts, claims managers, risk managers, and insurance portfolio managers. It may provide useful information for improving risk estimation, reviewing renewal practices, updating premium assumptions, forecasting claims experience, and strengthening portfolio risk management. The findings may also assist insurers in evaluating how renewal intervals influence the reliability of projected insurance risks. The study concludes that policy renewal intervals are important considerations in general insurance risk estimation because the timing of policy reassessment can influence exposure measurement, claims assumptions, and projected risk levels. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly analyse renewal patterns, incorporate appropriate renewal interval assumptions into actuarial risk models, and conduct sensitivity analysis to assess the effects of alternative renewal intervals on general insurance risk estimates.
