Effect of Quota Share Proportions on Insurance Risk Transfer
Abstract
Quota share reinsurance is an important proportional reinsurance arrangement through which an insurer transfers a predetermined proportion of its premiums, claims, and associated risks to a reinsurer. The proportion selected can influence the amount of risk retained by the insurer and the level of protection obtained through reinsurance. Understanding how quota share proportions affect risk transfer is therefore important for insurers seeking to maintain an appropriate balance between risk retention, underwriting capacity, and financial stability. This study examines the effect of quota share proportions on insurance risk transfer. It will assess how different quota share percentages influence the amount of underwriting risk transferred from the insurer to the reinsurer. The study will also consider the implications of quota share arrangements for retained claims, ceded premiums, net underwriting exposure, and the insurer's overall risk position. The study will focus on key actuarial measures associated with quota share reinsurance, including the proportion of premiums ceded, proportion of claims transferred, retained loss exposure, reinsurance recoveries, and changes in the insurer's net risk position. Different quota share proportions will be examined to determine how increases or reductions in the ceded percentage affect the distribution of insurance risk between the insurer and reinsurer. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance claims, premium, and reinsurance data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and actuarial techniques. Scenario analysis will also be applied to compare the effects of different quota share proportions on risk retention and risk transfer. Measures such as retained claims, ceded claims, net loss exposure, and risk transfer ratios will be used to evaluate the relationship between quota share proportions and insurance risk transfer. The study is expected to show that higher quota share proportions will generally result in greater transfer of underwriting risk to the reinsurer and lower risk exposure for the primary insurer. However, higher proportions may also lead to a greater share of premiums and future underwriting income being ceded. Lower quota share proportions are expected to leave the insurer with a larger retained exposure to claims and underwriting losses. The study is expected to provide useful information for insurers in determining appropriate quota share proportions for managing underwriting risks. The findings may assist actuaries and insurance managers in evaluating the trade-offs between risk transfer, premium retention, claims exposure, and underwriting capacity when designing proportional reinsurance arrangements. The study may also contribute to improved reinsurance planning and risk management practices. The study concludes that quota share proportions are an important actuarial consideration in determining the extent to which insurance risks are transferred from primary insurers to reinsurers. It is therefore recommended that insurers carefully evaluate claims experience, premium income, risk exposure, and financial capacity when determining suitable quota share proportions. Appropriate actuarial analysis should be used to ensure that reinsurance arrangements provide adequate risk transfer while maintaining sustainable underwriting operations.
