Effect of Reversionary Annuity Structures on Actuarial Present Values

Abstract

Reversionary annuities are life insurance and pension arrangements in which periodic income payments become payable to a beneficiary following the death of another individual. The actuarial present value of such benefits depends on the timing and probability of future payments, making the structure of the reversionary annuity important in determining its financial value. Accurate valuation is therefore necessary for appropriate premium determination, reserve estimation, and benefit planning. This study examines the effect of reversionary annuity structures on actuarial present values. It will focus on how differences in benefit arrangements and payment conditions influence the present value of expected future annuity payments. The study will consider variations in reversionary benefit levels, payment durations, ages of the primary life and beneficiary, and other relevant contract characteristics. The study will further examine the influence of mortality probabilities, survival probabilities, interest rate assumptions, and payment frequencies on actuarial present values. Different reversionary annuity structures will be evaluated using appropriate actuarial valuation functions to determine how changes in these factors affect the value of expected benefits. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between the timing of reversionary payments and the discounting of future cash flows. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Actuarial models and life table functions will be used to estimate the expected present values of reversionary annuity benefits under different structural assumptions. Descriptive analysis and comparative actuarial calculations will be applied to assess variations in present values across different benefit structures, mortality assumptions, interest rates, and payment intervals. The study is expected to reveal that differences in reversionary annuity structures may produce substantial variations in actuarial present values. Structures involving longer payment periods or higher reversionary benefits may generate higher present values, while changes in mortality and interest rate assumptions may alter the timing and discounted value of expected payments. The findings may also demonstrate the sensitivity of actuarial values to the ages and survival patterns of the individuals covered by the contract. The study is expected to provide useful information for actuaries, insurance companies, pension administrators, and other financial practitioners involved in the design and valuation of reversionary annuity contracts. Understanding the effect of different structures on actuarial present values can support more consistent benefit valuation, premium calculation, reserve determination, and financial planning. It may also assist in evaluating alternative annuity designs under different demographic and economic assumptions. The study concludes that the structure of a reversionary annuity is an important consideration in determining its actuarial present value. It is therefore recommended that actuaries and insurance practitioners carefully evaluate benefit structures, mortality assumptions, interest rates, and payment conditions when valuing reversionary annuity contracts. Accurate actuarial models should be applied to ensure that the estimated values adequately reflect the expected timing and financial obligations associated with the benefits.
