Effect of Terminal Bonus Eligibility Periods on Participating Policy Values

Abstract

Terminal bonuses are additional benefits that may be allocated to eligible participating life insurance policies, often at maturity, surrender, or another specified point during the policy term. Eligibility for these bonuses may depend on the duration for which a policy has remained in force and the conditions established by the insurance contract. Differences in terminal bonus eligibility periods can therefore influence the amount of benefits ultimately received by policyholders and the overall value of participating policies. This study will examine the effect of terminal bonus eligibility periods on participating policy values. It will assess how different eligibility periods influence the value of terminal bonuses and the total benefits payable under participating life insurance contracts. The study will also compare policy values under alternative eligibility periods to determine how the timing of eligibility affects policyholder benefits and insurer liabilities. The study will focus on terminal bonus eligibility periods, participating policy values, terminal bonuses, participating life insurance, policy maturity, surrender benefits, policy duration, bonus allocation, policyholder benefits, and actuarial valuation. Actuarial techniques will be used to estimate policy values under different terminal bonus eligibility structures. The study will also consider the effects of policy duration, fund performance, bonus rates, premium payments, and benefit structures on participating policy values. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical participating life insurance policy, premium, bonus, fund performance, maturity, surrender, and benefit data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, actuarial valuation models, comparative analysis, cash flow projections, scenario analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Policy values will be estimated under alternative terminal bonus eligibility periods and compared to determine their effects on projected policy benefits and liabilities. The study is expected to reveal that terminal bonus eligibility periods may have a significant effect on participating policy values. Longer eligibility periods may increase the opportunity for policyholders to qualify for terminal bonuses and may result in higher projected benefits under favourable participating fund performance, while shorter eligibility periods may produce different benefit outcomes. The magnitude of the effect may depend on policy duration, bonus allocation rules, investment performance, premium levels, policy maturity conditions, and the structure of the participating fund. The study will be useful to actuaries, life insurance companies, policyholders, underwriters, financial managers, investment analysts, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for evaluating terminal bonus structures, improving participating policy valuation, assessing policyholder benefits, and supporting the design of equitable bonus eligibility provisions. The findings may also assist insurers in understanding the financial implications of different eligibility periods when projecting participating policy liabilities. The study concludes that terminal bonus eligibility periods are important considerations in participating policy valuation because the period required for eligibility can influence the benefits available to policyholders and the liabilities assumed by insurers. It is therefore recommended that insurers and actuaries carefully evaluate terminal bonus eligibility conditions, assess their effects under different fund performance scenarios, and regularly review bonus assumptions to support appropriate and sustainable participating policy values.
