Effect of Treasury Bill Yields on Insurance Investment Income

Abstract

The study examines the effect of treasury bill yields on insurance investment income, focusing on how changes in the returns generated from short-term government securities may influence the investment income earned by insurance companies. Treasury bills are commonly used by insurers as investment instruments because of their relatively low credit risk, liquidity, and predictable income characteristics. Changes in treasury bill yields can therefore influence the level of income generated from funds allocated to these instruments and may affect the overall investment performance of insurance companies. The study will investigate the relationship between treasury bill yields and investment income generated by insurance companies. Attention will be given to the volume of funds invested in treasury bills, prevailing treasury bill rates, investment maturity periods, reinvestment patterns, and income generated from these investments. The study will assess whether increases or decreases in treasury bill yields correspond with changes in the investment income of insurance companies over the study period. The study will further examine factors that may influence the effect of treasury bill yields on insurance investment income, including monetary policy changes, prevailing interest rates, inflation, investment duration, portfolio allocation, and reinvestment decisions. Measures such as treasury bill yield rates, interest income, investment returns, treasury bill investment proportions, and return on investment will be considered. These measures will help determine the extent to which changes in treasury bill yields contribute to variations in insurers’ investment income. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be obtained from insurance companies’ annual reports, financial statements, investment schedules, Central Bank publications, treasury bill market data, and other relevant secondary sources. Descriptive statistics, trend analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be employed to examine the relationship between treasury bill yields and insurance investment income. The study is expected to reveal that changes in treasury bill yields have a measurable effect on insurance investment income, particularly among insurers with substantial allocations to treasury bills. Periods of higher treasury bill yields may be associated with increased interest income from new investments and reinvestments, while declining yields may reduce the income generated from newly invested funds. The findings may also indicate that the magnitude of the effect varies according to portfolio allocation, investment maturity, and reinvestment practices. The findings are expected to provide useful information for insurance companies, investment managers, actuarial professionals, and financial regulators on the importance of monitoring treasury bill yield movements. The study may assist insurers in making informed decisions regarding the allocation of funds to short-term government securities, selecting appropriate investment maturities, and managing reinvestment risk. It may also support improved investment planning and income forecasting within insurance companies. The study concludes that treasury bill yields are an important determinant of investment income for insurance companies with significant exposure to treasury securities. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly monitor changes in treasury bill yields and monetary conditions while reviewing their short-term investment strategies. Appropriate diversification, maturity planning, and reinvestment strategies should be adopted to maintain stable investment income and support the financial objectives of insurance companies.
