Effect of Underwriting Cycle Changes on General Insurance Premium Rates

Abstract

The underwriting cycle represents recurring fluctuations in insurance market conditions that influence premium rates, underwriting capacity, claims experience, and insurers’ profitability over time. Changes in the underwriting cycle can create periods of increasing or decreasing premium rates as insurers respond to variations in risk exposure, claims costs, investment conditions, and market competition. Understanding these changes is therefore important for effective premium determination and general insurance pricing. This study examines the effect of underwriting cycle changes on general insurance premium rates. The study will assess how movements between different phases of the underwriting cycle influence the premiums charged for general insurance products. It will focus on the relationship between changes in market conditions and adjustments in insurance premium rates across different periods. The study will consider factors such as claims frequency, claims severity, loss ratios, underwriting capacity, reinsurance costs, investment returns, market competition, inflation, and changes in risk exposure. These factors will be examined to determine how variations in underwriting cycle conditions influence insurers’ premium-setting decisions and the resulting changes in general insurance premium rates. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical premium and claims data from general insurance business will be analysed using descriptive statistics, trend analysis, correlation analysis, and regression techniques. Underwriting cycle indicators and premium rate movements will be examined over selected periods to determine the relationship between changes in underwriting conditions and general insurance premium rates. The study is expected to reveal that changes in the underwriting cycle may have a significant effect on general insurance premium rates. Periods of increased claims costs, reduced underwriting capacity, higher reinsurance costs, or increased risk exposure may be associated with higher premium rates, while improved claims experience and stronger underwriting capacity may contribute to more stable or lower rates. The findings may also indicate that the magnitude of premium adjustments varies across insurance product classes. The study will be useful to general insurance companies, actuaries, insurance brokers, regulators, and other stakeholders involved in insurance pricing and risk management. It may provide useful information for understanding premium rate movements, improving underwriting decisions, evaluating market conditions, and developing pricing strategies that appropriately reflect changes in insurance risks and operating conditions. The study concludes that underwriting cycle changes can influence general insurance premium rates through their effects on claims experience, underwriting capacity, market conditions, and other pricing factors. It is therefore recommended that insurers continuously monitor underwriting cycle indicators, maintain reliable claims data, regularly review premium rates, and incorporate changing risk and market conditions into their premium-setting processes.
