Effect of Vehicle Safety Features on Motor Insurance Claim Costs

Abstract

The study examines the effect of vehicle safety features on motor insurance claim costs, focusing on how the presence and effectiveness of safety technologies influence the financial cost of claims arising from insured vehicle losses. Vehicle safety features such as anti-lock braking systems, airbags, electronic stability control, collision warning systems, and automatic emergency braking can affect the likelihood and severity of accidents. Understanding their relationship with claim costs is therefore important for actuarial risk assessment and motor insurance pricing. The study will investigate how variations in vehicle safety features affect motor insurance claim costs. It will examine whether vehicles equipped with different safety technologies experience differences in the frequency and financial severity of insurance claims. The study will also assess the extent to which safety features can provide useful information for evaluating expected claims costs in motor insurance portfolios. The analysis will focus on vehicle safety features, claim frequency, claim severity, average claim costs, total claim costs, and expected losses. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be used to assess differences in claims experience between vehicles with different safety characteristics. The study will consider how specific safety technologies may reduce accident-related losses or limit the financial consequences of accidents. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant motor insurance policy, vehicle, safety feature, and claims data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression techniques, and actuarial loss estimation methods. Comparative analysis will be conducted to determine variations in claim costs associated with different vehicle safety features. The study is expected to reveal that vehicle safety features have a measurable effect on motor insurance claim costs. Vehicles equipped with effective safety technologies may experience lower claim frequency, reduced claim severity, or lower overall claim costs because some accidents may be prevented or their consequences reduced. However, the magnitude of the effect is expected to vary according to the type of safety feature, vehicle characteristics, driving conditions, and claims experience. The findings are expected to provide useful information for insurers and actuaries in evaluating vehicle safety features as potential factors in motor insurance risk assessment and premium determination. The study may support more accurate estimation of expected claim costs and contribute to the development of insurance rating approaches that account for differences in vehicle safety characteristics. It may also provide useful information for vehicle owners when considering the insurance implications of safety technologies. The study concludes that vehicle safety features are relevant factors in the assessment of motor insurance claim costs. It is therefore recommended that insurers analyse reliable vehicle and claims data to determine the financial effects of safety technologies and incorporate appropriate actuarial techniques when assessing their influence on motor insurance risk and expected claim costs.
