Anatomical Variation in the Course of the Ulnar Nerve Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines anatomical variation in the course of the ulnar nerve among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its pathway, branching pattern, anatomical relationships, and position along the arm, forearm, wrist, and hand. The ulnar nerve is a major terminal branch of the brachial plexus that provides motor and sensory innervation to important structures of the upper limb and passes through several anatomically vulnerable regions. Knowledge of variations in its course is important for understanding upper limb neuroanatomy and for supporting clinical procedures involving the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand. The study will assess the anatomical course of the ulnar nerve among undergraduate students using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the typical pathway of the ulnar nerve, documenting variations in its relationships with surrounding muscles, bones, and fascial structures, determining variations in its branching pattern and position at clinically relevant anatomical sites, and assessing the frequency and distribution of the observed anatomical patterns among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while the ulnar nerve will be evaluated using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or anatomical examination procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine significant differences in the observed anatomical characteristics. The study is expected to reveal variations in the course and anatomical relationships of the ulnar nerve among the participants. Differences may be observed in its pathway around the medial aspect of the elbow, its relationship with the flexor muscles of the forearm, and its position at the wrist and hand. Variations in the branching pattern and distribution of its motor and sensory branches may also be identified, with some characteristics potentially showing statistically significant differences between individuals or between the right and left sides. The findings will be useful to anatomists, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, hand surgeons, radiologists, anesthetists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the upper limb. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding ulnar nerve anatomy, interpreting relevant imaging findings, planning nerve blocks and surgical procedures, and reducing the risk of inadvertent nerve injury during interventions involving the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand. The study will conclude by documenting the anatomical variations in the course of the ulnar nerve among undergraduate students. It is recommended that awareness of normal variations in the pathway and anatomical relationships of the ulnar nerve be considered during anatomical, radiological, and clinical assessment of the upper limb, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on ulnar nerve anatomy.
