Anatomical Variation in the Formation of the Superficial Palmar Arch Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines anatomical variation in the formation of the superficial palmar arch among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its arterial contributors, pattern of formation, course, and distribution within the palm. The superficial palmar arch is an important arterial network that contributes to the blood supply of the hand and fingers and is commonly formed by contributions from the ulnar artery and the superficial palmar branch of the radial artery. Knowledge of variations in its formation is important for understanding vascular anatomy and for supporting clinical procedures involving the hand and wrist. The study will assess the anatomical formation of the superficial palmar arch among young adults using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the common pattern of formation, documenting variations in the arterial contributors to the arch, determining the frequency of different formation patterns, assessing the course and distribution of the arch, and comparing the observed patterns between the right and left hands where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while the superficial palmar arch will be evaluated using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or anatomical examination procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine significant differences in the observed arterial patterns. The study is expected to reveal variations in the formation of the superficial palmar arch among the participants. Although the commonly described formation by the ulnar artery with contribution from the superficial palmar branch of the radial artery may be observed, alternative patterns involving different arterial contributions or incomplete arch formation may also be identified. Bilateral differences in the formation patterns may occur, demonstrating the presence of normal anatomical diversity in the arterial supply of the hand. The findings will be useful to anatomists, vascular surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, hand surgeons, radiologists, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the upper limb. The study may provide useful reference information for interpreting vascular imaging, planning reconstructive and vascular procedures, performing arterial cannulation or regional interventions, and reducing the risk of vascular injury during procedures involving the hand and wrist. The study will conclude by documenting the anatomical variations in the formation of the superficial palmar arch among young adults. It is recommended that awareness of variations in the arterial formation and distribution of the superficial palmar arch be considered during anatomical, radiological, and surgical assessment of the hand, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on palmar arterial anatomy.
