Anatomical Variation of the Quadrate Lobe of the Liver Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the anatomical variation of the quadrate lobe of the liver among undergraduate students, with emphasis on its morphology, size, shape, boundaries, and anatomical relationships. The quadrate lobe is located on the visceral surface of the liver between the gallbladder fossa and the fissure for the ligamentum teres and forms an important component of the liver’s anatomical organization. Knowledge of its morphological variation is relevant to understanding normal liver anatomy and may be useful in the interpretation of anatomical and radiological findings involving the hepatobiliary region. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the quadrate lobe using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate anatomical or imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the shape and configuration of the quadrate lobe, determining its measurable dimensions, assessing its boundaries and relationships with surrounding hepatic structures, and comparing the observed characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate participants or suitable anatomical specimens or imaging materials will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the method of assessment employed. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the quadrate lobe will be obtained using standardized procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied to assess side-related or other measurable differences where necessary. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology, dimensions, shape, and configuration of the quadrate lobe among the study population. Differences may also be observed in its boundaries and anatomical relationships with adjacent structures, with some measurements potentially demonstrating statistically significant variation between the right and left sides. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures be used when assessing the quadrate lobe, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data and improve understanding of hepatic morphological variation.
