Anatomical Variation of the Sternohyoid Muscle Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the anatomical variation of the sternohyoid muscle among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its shape, size, length, thickness, attachment pattern, and overall anatomical configuration. The sternohyoid muscle is an infrahyoid muscle extending from the sternum and medial clavicular region to the hyoid bone and contributes to the depression and stabilization of the hyoid bone during swallowing and movements of the neck. Knowledge of its anatomical characteristics is important for understanding variations in the anterior neck region and may have clinical relevance in surgical procedures, radiological interpretation, and procedures involving the neck. The study will assess the anatomical characteristics and variations of the sternohyoid muscle among young adults using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate anatomical or imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different morphological patterns of the sternohyoid muscle, determining its measurable dimensions, assessing variations in its attachment and course, documenting the frequency of the observed anatomical patterns, and comparing the characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on the morphology, dimensions, attachment, and course of the sternohyoid muscle will be obtained using standardized anatomical examination, imaging-based procedures, or appropriate dissection methods where applicable. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to assess side-related differences and other observed variations. The study is expected to reveal different anatomical patterns of the sternohyoid muscle among the young adults studied. Variations may be observed in muscle length, width, thickness, shape, attachment, and overall configuration. Differences between the right and left sides may also be identified, with some measurements potentially demonstrating statistically significant variation. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate assessment procedures be used when evaluating the sternohyoid muscle, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data and improve understanding of its anatomical variability.
