Assessment of Anatomical Knowledge Required for Intramuscular Injection

Abstract

The study assesses anatomical knowledge required for intramuscular injection. Knowledge of relevant muscles, anatomical landmarks, nerves, blood vessels, and surrounding structures is important for understanding the anatomical basis of intramuscular injection and for identifying appropriate injection sites. Adequate anatomical knowledge may help students appreciate the location of target muscles and recognize structures that should be avoided during injection procedures. The study will assess students’ knowledge of anatomical structures and landmarks relevant to intramuscular injection. The specific objectives will include determining students’ knowledge of commonly used intramuscular injection sites, assessing their ability to identify the relevant muscles and anatomical landmarks, evaluating their understanding of important nerves and blood vessels that may be encountered near injection sites, and identifying areas of anatomical knowledge that present difficulties to students. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy and basic clinical instruction will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured and appropriately validated questionnaire and, where applicable, practical identification tasks involving anatomical models, specimens, diagrams, or clinical images. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of anatomical knowledge relevant to intramuscular injection. Students may demonstrate stronger knowledge of commonly taught injection sites and major anatomical landmarks, while greater difficulties may be observed in identifying the precise muscles, nerves, vessels, and spatial relationships associated with selected sites. Differences may also be observed between students’ theoretical knowledge and their ability to identify relevant anatomical landmarks using practical materials. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, nursing and clinical educators, medical educators, and other health sciences professionals involved in practical training. The study may help identify areas requiring additional surface anatomy demonstrations, anatomical models, landmark identification exercises, and clinically oriented anatomy teaching. It may also support improved integration of anatomical knowledge into the teaching of basic injection-related procedures. The study will conclude by assessing students’ anatomical knowledge relevant to intramuscular injection and identifying areas where additional educational support may be required. It is recommended that anatomy instruction should provide adequate practical opportunities for students to identify clinically relevant muscles, landmarks, nerves, and vessels associated with intramuscular injection sites. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are also recommended.
