Assessment of Students’ Ability to Identify Anatomical Structures During Cadaveric Dissection
Abstract
The study assesses students’ ability to identify anatomical structures during cadaveric dissection. Cadaveric dissection provides students with direct exposure to human anatomical structures and allows them to appreciate their three-dimensional arrangement, relationships, and anatomical variations. The ability to accurately identify structures during dissection is an important component of practical anatomy education and may reflect students’ capacity to apply theoretical knowledge in a real anatomical setting. The study will assess students’ ability to identify anatomical structures during cadaveric dissection. The specific objectives will include determining students’ accuracy in identifying selected structures during dissection, assessing their ability to use anatomical landmarks and relationships for structural identification, identifying anatomical regions or structures that present greater difficulty, and examining students’ performance across different stages or areas of the dissection process. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students with relevant experience in cadaveric anatomy practical sessions will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a standardized practical identification assessment conducted during cadaveric dissection, using selected anatomical structures, landmarks, and relationships as assessment points. Students’ performance will be scored using a predetermined marking scheme, and the data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability to identify anatomical structures during cadaveric dissection. Students may demonstrate greater accuracy when identifying prominent and frequently encountered structures, while greater difficulties may be observed with small structures, closely related anatomical features, structures located in deeper planes, and structures whose identification depends on careful dissection and appreciation of spatial relationships. Differences may also be observed across different anatomical regions and stages of practical dissection. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, dissection instructors, medical educators, and curriculum developers by providing information on students’ practical identification abilities during cadaver-based learning. The study may help identify areas requiring additional dissection exposure, demonstrations, guided identification exercises, specimen-based revision, and integration of theoretical and practical anatomy teaching. It may also support the improvement of practical anatomy assessment strategies and the organization of cadaveric teaching sessions. The study will conclude by assessing students’ ability to identify anatomical structures during cadaveric dissection and documenting areas of relative strength and difficulty. It is recommended that students should receive adequate guided dissection experience and repeated opportunities to identify structures using anatomical landmarks and spatial relationships. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and different cadaveric learning environments are also recommended.
