Assessment of Students’ Ability to Identify Anatomical Structures from Unlabeled Specimens
Abstract
The study examines students’ ability to identify anatomical structures from unlabeled specimens, with emphasis on their capacity to recognize and correctly name structures without the assistance of labels or identifying markers. Independent identification of anatomical structures is an important aspect of practical anatomy learning because students are expected to apply their knowledge of anatomical landmarks, relationships, shape, position, and structural characteristics during practical assessments. Developing this ability may strengthen students’ confidence and competence in practical anatomical identification. The study will assess students’ ability to identify anatomical structures from unlabeled specimens and determine their accuracy in recognizing structures from different anatomical regions. The specific objectives will include assessing students’ ability to identify bones, muscles, organs, nerves, blood vessels, and other structures from unlabeled specimens, determining areas where identification is more difficult, examining the use of anatomical landmarks and relationships during identification, and assessing students’ ability to distinguish visually similar or closely related structures. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students with relevant practical anatomy training will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through standardized practical identification exercises involving unlabeled anatomical specimens and may include selected models or appropriately prepared anatomical materials. Students’ identification responses will be recorded and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability to identify anatomical structures from unlabeled specimens. Major and distinctive structures with clear anatomical landmarks may be identified more accurately, while small, deep, closely related, or visually similar structures may present greater difficulty. Differences may also be observed in students’ ability to use structural relationships, orientation, and distinguishing features when identifying specimens without labels. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, practical anatomy instructors, and other healthcare educators involved in practical anatomy teaching and assessment. The study may provide useful information on students’ strengths and difficulties in independent specimen identification and may help identify areas requiring additional practical exposure. The findings may also support the use of diverse unlabeled specimens, comparative identification exercises, and guided practical sessions to strengthen students’ ability to recognize anatomical structures independently. The study will conclude by documenting students’ ability to identify anatomical structures from unlabeled specimens and identifying specific areas of difficulty in practical anatomical recognition. It is recommended that students should receive regular opportunities to work with unlabeled specimens and should be encouraged to apply anatomical landmarks, spatial relationships, and structural characteristics during identification. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on practical anatomical identification abilities.
