Assessment of Students’ Ability to Identify Human Body Structures on Anatomical Specimens
Abstract
The study examines students’ ability to identify human body structures on anatomical specimens, with emphasis on their practical recognition of anatomical structures during laboratory-based anatomy learning. Identification of structures on anatomical specimens is an important component of practical anatomy education because it enables students to relate theoretical knowledge to the actual appearance, position, and relationships of structures within the human body. Competence in specimen identification may also contribute to students’ development of practical anatomical knowledge. The study will assess students’ ability to identify selected human body structures on anatomical specimens and determine their level of accuracy in recognizing structures from different anatomical regions. The study will also assess students’ ability to identify structures based on their anatomical position, relationships, distinctive features, and orientation on specimens and determine areas in which students may experience difficulty during practical identification tasks. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have participated in human anatomy practical sessions will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured practical anatomy identification assessment involving suitable anatomical specimens and standardized identification tasks. Students’ responses will be scored according to predetermined criteria, and the resulting data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests may be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability among students in identifying human body structures on anatomical specimens. Differences may be observed in the identification of structures from different anatomical regions, with students potentially demonstrating greater difficulty with structures that have similar appearances, complex spatial relationships, or less distinctive anatomical features. The findings may also reveal areas where students require additional practical exposure and guided identification exercises. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, laboratory instructors, and curriculum developers involved in practical anatomy education. The study may provide information on students’ practical identification abilities and help educators identify specific areas requiring greater attention during laboratory sessions. The findings may also support the development of structured specimen-based assessments, guided practical demonstrations, and repeated identification exercises to strengthen students’ practical anatomical knowledge. The study will conclude by documenting students’ ability to identify human body structures on anatomical specimens and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in practical anatomy learning. It is recommended that students receive adequate opportunities to work with appropriately prepared anatomical specimens and participate in supervised identification activities to strengthen their recognition of anatomical structures and relationships. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are also recommended to provide broader evidence on students’ practical anatomy identification abilities.
