Assessment of Students’ Ability to Recognize Anatomical Structures in Unlabeled Specimens
Abstract
The study assesses students’ ability to recognize anatomical structures in unlabeled specimens. Recognition of anatomical structures without accompanying labels is an important aspect of practical anatomy learning because it requires students to apply their knowledge of anatomical features, relationships, landmarks, and spatial orientation. The ability to recognize structures independently may also reflect students’ preparedness for practical examinations and their understanding of anatomical organization. The study will assess students’ ability to identify anatomical structures presented without labels. The specific objectives will include determining students’ accuracy in recognizing selected anatomical structures, assessing their ability to use anatomical landmarks and structural relationships during identification, identifying structures that students find more difficult to recognize when presented without labels, and examining students’ performance across different anatomical regions and types of specimens. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy instruction will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a standardized practical identification assessment involving appropriately selected unlabeled anatomical specimens, models, diagrams, or images. Students’ responses will be scored using a predetermined marking scheme, and the data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability to recognize anatomical structures in unlabeled specimens. Students may demonstrate higher accuracy when identifying structures with distinctive features or familiar anatomical landmarks, while greater difficulties may be observed with small, closely related, partially exposed, or visually similar structures. Differences in performance may also be observed across anatomical regions and specimen types, particularly where accurate identification depends on understanding spatial relationships rather than isolated structural features. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, practical instructors, and medical and health sciences educators by providing information on students’ independent anatomical recognition skills. The study may help identify areas requiring additional specimen exposure, repeated identification exercises, practical demonstrations, anatomical models, and visual learning resources. It may also support the development of practical anatomy teaching strategies that encourage students to recognize structures using anatomical landmarks and relationships rather than relying mainly on labels. The study will conclude by assessing students’ ability to recognize anatomical structures independently in unlabeled specimens and identifying areas of relative strength and difficulty. It is recommended that anatomy teaching should provide adequate opportunities for students to practice identifying structures using diverse unlabeled specimens and practical materials before formal examinations. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and different practical learning environments are also recommended.
