Assessment of Students’ Ability to Reconstruct Anatomical Relationships from Cross-Sectional Images
Abstract
The study assesses students’ ability to reconstruct anatomical relationships from cross-sectional images. Cross-sectional anatomy provides important information about the relative position, depth, shape, and spatial arrangement of anatomical structures that may not be fully appreciated from conventional two-dimensional anatomical illustrations. The ability to interpret cross-sectional images and mentally reconstruct the relationships between structures is an important component of anatomical knowledge and may support students’ understanding of radiological and clinical anatomy. The study will assess students’ ability to interpret cross-sectional images and reconstruct the spatial relationships of anatomical structures. The specific objectives will include determining students’ ability to identify structures on cross-sectional images, assessing their understanding of the relative positions and relationships of structures within selected anatomical regions, evaluating their ability to mentally reconstruct three-dimensional relationships from sequential or single-section images, and identifying anatomical regions or structures that present greater difficulty during interpretation. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy instruction will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured cross-sectional anatomy assessment involving appropriately selected computed tomography images, magnetic resonance images, anatomical sections, or standardized cross-sectional illustrations. Students’ responses will be scored using a predetermined marking scheme, and the data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability to reconstruct anatomical relationships from cross-sectional images. Students may demonstrate stronger performance in recognizing prominent structures and familiar anatomical regions, while greater difficulties may be observed when interpreting small structures, overlapping tissues, unfamiliar viewing orientations, and complex spatial relationships. Variations may also occur in students’ ability to integrate information from different sections to form an accurate understanding of three-dimensional anatomical organization. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, radiologists, medical educators, and curriculum developers by providing information on students’ ability to interpret cross-sectional anatomy. The study may help identify areas where additional exposure to radiological images, anatomical sections, three-dimensional models, sequential image interpretation, and guided spatial orientation exercises may be beneficial. It may also support the integration of imaging-based resources into anatomy teaching and practical assessment. The study will conclude by assessing students’ ability to reconstruct anatomical relationships from cross-sectional images and identifying areas of relative strength and difficulty. It is recommended that anatomy education should provide students with regular opportunities to interpret cross-sectional images and relate sectional appearances to three-dimensional anatomical structures. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and different imaging-based learning environments are also recommended.
