Assessment of Students’ Ability to Trace Anatomical Structures Across Serial Sections

Abstract

The study assesses students’ ability to trace anatomical structures across serial sections. Understanding the continuity and changing appearance of anatomical structures across successive sections is an important aspect of sectional and three-dimensional anatomy. The ability to follow a structure from one section to another enables students to appreciate its course, extent, relationships, and changes in position or shape as it passes through different anatomical levels. The study will assess students’ ability to trace selected anatomical structures across serial anatomical sections. The specific objectives will include determining students’ ability to recognize the same structure across successive sections, assessing their understanding of the continuity and course of anatomical structures, evaluating their ability to relate structures across different sectional levels, and identifying anatomical structures or regions that present greater difficulty during serial-section interpretation. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy and sectional anatomy instruction will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a standardized practical assessment involving serial anatomical sections, computed tomography images, magnetic resonance images, or other appropriate sectional materials. Students’ responses will be scored using a predetermined marking scheme, and the data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability to trace anatomical structures across serial sections. Students may demonstrate greater accuracy when following prominent structures with relatively consistent appearances, while greater difficulties may be observed when structures change in shape, size, position, or appearance across successive sections. Challenges may also occur when structures are small, closely related to surrounding tissues, or difficult to distinguish from structures with similar sectional appearances. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, radiologists, medical educators, and curriculum developers by providing information on students’ ability to understand anatomical continuity across sectional images. The study may help identify areas where additional serial-section exercises, radiological demonstrations, three-dimensional anatomical models, and guided image-tracing activities may be beneficial. It may also support the development of teaching approaches that strengthen students’ understanding of the relationship between sectional anatomy and three-dimensional anatomical organization. The study will conclude by assessing students’ ability to trace anatomical structures across serial sections and identifying areas of relative strength and difficulty. It is recommended that anatomy teaching should provide students with regular opportunities to follow structures across successive anatomical levels and relate sectional appearances to their continuous three-dimensional course. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and different sectional anatomy learning environments are also recommended.
