Assessment of Students’ Ability to Transfer Theoretical Anatomy Knowledge to Practical Identification

Abstract

The study assesses students’ ability to transfer theoretical anatomy knowledge to practical identification of human anatomical structures. The ability to apply knowledge acquired from lectures, textbooks, diagrams, and other theoretical learning resources to the identification of actual anatomical structures is an important component of anatomy education. Effective transfer of theoretical knowledge to practical settings may support students’ understanding of anatomical relationships and their ability to recognize structures in specimens and practical learning environments. The study will assess the extent to which undergraduate students can apply theoretical anatomy knowledge during practical identification activities. The specific objectives will include determining students’ ability to identify anatomical structures from practical specimens, assessing their ability to relate theoretical descriptions to physical anatomical features, identifying structures that are more difficult to recognize in practical settings, and examining the consistency between students’ theoretical knowledge and practical identification performance. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant theoretical and practical anatomy instruction will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured theoretical anatomy assessment and a practical identification assessment involving appropriate anatomical specimens, models, images, or other standardized practical materials. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation or comparative tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability to transfer theoretical anatomy knowledge to practical identification. Students may demonstrate stronger performance in identifying commonly encountered structures while experiencing greater difficulty with structures that are closely related, located in complex anatomical regions, or presented from unfamiliar perspectives. Differences may also be observed between theoretical assessment scores and practical identification performance, with some students demonstrating difficulty in applying knowledge from theoretical learning situations to actual anatomical structures. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical and health sciences educators, and curriculum developers by providing information on students’ practical application of theoretical anatomical knowledge. The study may help identify areas where students require additional practical exposure, specimen-based learning, visual resources, demonstrations, and structured identification exercises. It may also provide useful information for improving the organization of practical anatomy teaching and assessment. The study will conclude by assessing the extent to which undergraduate students are able to apply theoretical anatomy knowledge to the practical identification of anatomical structures. It is recommended that anatomy teaching should provide adequate opportunities for students to connect theoretical concepts with practical anatomical materials through repeated identification exercises, specimen demonstrations, and appropriately structured practical assessments. Further studies involving larger student populations and different anatomy learning environments are also recommended.
