Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Orientation in Three-Dimensional Space
Abstract
The study assesses students’ knowledge of anatomical orientation in three-dimensional space. Understanding the position, direction, depth, and spatial relationships of anatomical structures is an important component of human anatomy education. The ability to mentally interpret structures in three-dimensional space enables students to understand the relative positions of organs, muscles, bones, vessels, nerves, and other anatomical features beyond their appearance in two-dimensional diagrams. The study will assess students’ knowledge of three-dimensional anatomical orientation and their ability to interpret spatial relationships between anatomical structures. The specific objectives will include determining students’ understanding of anatomical directions and positions, assessing their ability to interpret the relative location of structures from different viewpoints, identifying areas of three-dimensional anatomy that present difficulties, and evaluating students’ ability to relate anatomical structures to their surrounding structures and body regions. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy instruction will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured and appropriately validated anatomy assessment involving diagrams, anatomical models, images, and three-dimensional spatial orientation tasks. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of three-dimensional anatomical orientation among the students. Students may demonstrate stronger understanding of basic anatomical positions and directions, while greater difficulties may be observed when interpreting depth, overlapping structures, unfamiliar viewing angles, and complex spatial relationships. Differences may also be observed in students’ ability to mentally reconstruct or identify anatomical structures when their orientation or presentation is changed. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, and curriculum developers by providing information on students’ understanding of spatial relationships within the human body. The study may help identify areas requiring additional use of anatomical models, three-dimensional visualizations, practical demonstrations, imaging resources, and spatial orientation exercises. It may also support the development of anatomy teaching approaches that improve students’ ability to visualize and interpret anatomical structures in three-dimensional space. The study will conclude by assessing students’ knowledge of anatomical orientation in three-dimensional space and identifying areas where additional educational support may be required. It is recommended that anatomy instruction should provide repeated opportunities for students to interpret structures from different perspectives and relate theoretical descriptions to three-dimensional anatomical relationships. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are also recommended.
