Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Structures Relevant to Fracture Assessment

Abstract

The study examines students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to fracture assessment, with emphasis on the bones, joints, muscles, blood vessels, nerves, and anatomical landmarks involved in the identification and understanding of fractures. Adequate knowledge of these structures is essential for recognizing the location and extent of skeletal injuries and for understanding the possible effects of fractures on surrounding tissues. A sound understanding of fracture-related anatomy is therefore important in anatomy education and in the development of clinically relevant anatomical knowledge among undergraduate students. The study will assess students’ knowledge of anatomical structures associated with commonly encountered fractures and determine their ability to identify relevant bones, anatomical landmarks, joints, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. It will also examine students’ understanding of the anatomical relationships between fractured bones and surrounding structures and identify areas of fracture-related anatomy that may be difficult for students to recognize or interpret. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students with relevant anatomy training will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and standardized anatomical identification or image-based assessment focusing on structures relevant to fracture assessment. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of fracture-related anatomical structures among the students. Students may demonstrate stronger knowledge of major bones and commonly recognized anatomical landmarks, while structures that are small, deeply located, closely related, or vulnerable to injury alongside fractures may present greater difficulty. Differences may also be observed in students’ ability to relate fracture locations to surrounding nerves, blood vessels, muscles, and joints. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, clinical instructors, radiologists, orthopaedic professionals, and other healthcare educators involved in teaching or assessing fracture-related anatomy. The study may provide useful information for identifying areas where students require additional anatomical explanation, practical demonstration, specimen-based learning, or image-based instruction. Improved understanding of the anatomical structures associated with fractures may also strengthen students’ ability to connect basic anatomical knowledge with clinically relevant injury assessment. The study will conclude by documenting the level of students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to fracture assessment and identifying important areas of strength and difficulty. It is recommended that fracture-related anatomy should be incorporated into practical and clinically oriented anatomy teaching through the use of anatomical specimens, models, radiological images, and structured identification exercises. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ knowledge of clinically relevant fracture anatomy.
