Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Structures Relevant to Joint Dislocation
Abstract
The study examines students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to joint dislocation, with emphasis on bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and anatomical landmarks involved in maintaining normal joint stability and movement. Knowledge of these structures is important for understanding how displacement of articulating surfaces can affect surrounding tissues and alter normal joint function. Adequate understanding of joint-related anatomy is therefore essential for developing clinically relevant anatomical knowledge among undergraduate students. The study will assess students’ knowledge of anatomical structures associated with commonly affected joints and determine their ability to identify the bones, articular surfaces, ligaments, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and anatomical landmarks relevant to joint dislocation. It will also examine students’ understanding of the anatomical relationships between dislocated joints and surrounding structures and identify areas of joint anatomy that may present difficulties during learning and practical identification. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy training will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and standardized anatomical identification or image-based assessment focusing on structures relevant to joint dislocation. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to joint dislocation among the students. Students may demonstrate stronger knowledge of major bones and easily identifiable joint structures, while smaller ligaments, surrounding nerves and blood vessels, and complex anatomical relationships may present greater difficulty. Variations may also be observed in students’ ability to relate the position of a dislocated joint to the structures that may be affected during displacement. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, clinical instructors, radiologists, orthopaedic professionals, and other healthcare educators involved in teaching or assessing musculoskeletal anatomy. The study may provide useful information for identifying areas where students require additional practical demonstrations, anatomical models, specimens, or image-based learning. Improved knowledge of joint anatomy may also strengthen students’ ability to connect anatomical structures with clinically relevant conditions involving joint instability and dislocation. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to joint dislocation and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in their understanding of joint-related anatomy. It is recommended that clinically oriented approaches should be incorporated into the teaching of joint anatomy through practical identification exercises, anatomical models, specimens, and appropriate radiological images. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ understanding of clinically relevant joint anatomy.
