Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Structures Relevant to Occupational Injuries
Abstract
The study examines students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to occupational injuries, with emphasis on the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, and anatomical landmarks that may be affected by injuries occurring in workplace environments. Knowledge of these structures is important for understanding the anatomical consequences of common occupational injuries and the possible involvement of surrounding tissues. Adequate knowledge of occupational injury-related anatomy is therefore important for developing clinically relevant anatomical understanding among undergraduate students. The study will assess students’ knowledge of anatomical structures commonly involved in occupational injuries and determine their ability to identify relevant bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, and anatomical landmarks. It will also examine students’ understanding of the relationships between anatomical structures and common workplace injury patterns and identify areas of occupational injury-related anatomy that may present difficulties during learning and practical identification. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy training will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and standardized anatomical identification or image-based assessment focusing on structures relevant to occupational injuries. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to occupational injuries among the students. Students may demonstrate stronger knowledge of major bones, joints, and commonly recognized anatomical landmarks, while smaller structures, deeper tissues, and closely related nerves, blood vessels, tendons, and ligaments may present greater difficulty. Differences may also be observed in students’ ability to relate specific anatomical structures to different types and locations of occupational injuries. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, occupational health professionals, clinical instructors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare educators involved in teaching or assessing injury-related anatomy. The study may provide useful information for identifying areas where students require additional practical demonstrations, anatomical models, specimens, or image-based learning. Improved knowledge of occupational injury-related anatomy may also strengthen students’ understanding of how workplace injuries can affect different anatomical structures and body regions. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to occupational injuries and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in their understanding. It is recommended that occupational injury-related examples should be incorporated into anatomy teaching through practical identification exercises, anatomical models, specimens, and appropriate clinical or radiological images. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ understanding of anatomy relevant to occupational health and injury assessment.
