Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Structures Relevant to Trauma
Abstract
The study assesses students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to trauma, with emphasis on the understanding of body structures that may be affected during traumatic injuries. Knowledge of bones, muscles, blood vessels, nerves, organs, and other anatomical structures is important for understanding the location, extent, and potential consequences of traumatic injuries. Assessing students’ knowledge in this area may provide useful information on their preparedness to apply anatomical concepts to trauma-related situations. The study will assess students’ knowledge of anatomical structures commonly involved in traumatic injuries and their understanding of the relationships between affected structures. The specific objectives will include determining students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to trauma, assessing their ability to identify structures associated with selected traumatic injuries, evaluating their understanding of anatomical relationships in commonly affected regions, and identifying areas in which students experience greater difficulty. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be obtained using a structured questionnaire and standardized anatomy assessment questions covering selected bones, muscles, blood vessels, nerves, organs, and anatomical regions relevant to trauma. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied where necessary to examine variations in students’ knowledge. The study is expected to reveal variations in students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to trauma. Students may demonstrate stronger knowledge of commonly studied structures and major anatomical landmarks, while greater difficulty may be observed in areas involving closely related nerves and blood vessels, deep anatomical structures, or complex regional relationships. Differences may also occur in students’ ability to relate specific traumatic injuries to the anatomical structures that may be affected. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, emergency care instructors, and curriculum developers by providing information on students’ understanding of anatomy in relation to trauma. The findings may support the incorporation of trauma-oriented anatomical examples, practical identification exercises, imaging-based activities, and clinically relevant discussions into anatomy teaching. Such approaches may help students appreciate the importance of anatomical knowledge in understanding traumatic injuries. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to trauma and identifying areas requiring further learning. It is recommended that undergraduate anatomy teaching should include appropriate trauma-related anatomical applications alongside conventional theoretical and practical instruction. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations may be conducted to provide broader information on students’ preparedness to apply anatomical knowledge to trauma-related situations.
