Assessment of Students’ Understanding of Confidentiality and Respect in Cadaver-Based Learning
Abstract
The study examines students’ understanding of confidentiality and respect in cadaver-based learning, with emphasis on the ethical principles that guide the handling, discussion, study, and representation of human cadaveric specimens in anatomy education. Cadaver-based learning provides students with direct exposure to the human body and requires appropriate professional conduct toward donated or preserved human remains. Understanding confidentiality, dignity, respectful handling, and appropriate communication is therefore an important component of responsible anatomy education. The study will assess students’ understanding of confidentiality and respect in cadaver-based learning and determine their knowledge of appropriate ethical conduct when working with cadaveric specimens. The study will specifically examine students’ understanding of respectful handling of specimens, confidentiality concerning donor information, appropriate discussion of cadaveric materials, restrictions on photography and sharing of cadaver-related images, and professional behaviour during practical anatomy sessions. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have participated in cadaver-based anatomy practical sessions will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured and validated questionnaire designed to assess students’ knowledge and understanding of confidentiality, respect, dignity, and ethical conduct in cadaver-based learning. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests may be applied to examine relevant differences or associations. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of students’ understanding of confidentiality and respect in cadaver-based learning. Students may demonstrate stronger understanding of general respectful handling of cadaveric specimens, while some areas such as confidentiality of donor information, appropriate use of photographs, social media sharing, and discussion of cadaver-related information may present greater challenges. Differences may also be observed in students’ understanding of professional responsibilities associated with the use of human remains for educational purposes. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, laboratory instructors, and curriculum developers involved in cadaver-based anatomy education. The study may provide information on students’ understanding of ethical responsibilities and identify areas requiring greater emphasis during anatomy practical instruction. The findings may also support the development of orientation programmes, ethical guidelines, and structured discussions that promote professionalism, dignity, confidentiality, and respectful conduct in anatomy laboratories. The study will conclude by documenting students’ understanding of confidentiality and respect in cadaver-based learning and identifying areas where additional ethical education may be required. It is recommended that clear ethical guidelines on cadaver handling, confidentiality, photography, communication, and professional conduct be introduced and reinforced throughout cadaver-based anatomy training. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are also recommended to provide broader evidence on students’ ethical understanding in cadaver-based learning.
