Assessment of the Educational Value of Anatomical Specimen Collections

Abstract

The study examines the educational value of anatomical specimen collections, with emphasis on their contribution to practical anatomy teaching, structural identification, spatial understanding, and students’ appreciation of human anatomical relationships. Anatomical specimen collections provide direct and visual exposure to structures that may be difficult to understand through textbooks, diagrams, or digital resources alone. Their educational value may therefore extend beyond specimen availability to include their relevance, diversity, quality, accessibility, and suitability for supporting different aspects of anatomy learning. The study will assess the educational value of anatomical specimen collections used for undergraduate anatomy education and determine the extent to which students utilize these collections during practical learning. The specific objectives will include assessing the types and diversity of specimens available, determining their usefulness for identifying anatomical structures, examining their contribution to understanding spatial and structural relationships, assessing students’ perceptions of their educational usefulness, and identifying factors that may limit effective use of the collections. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, while relevant anatomy teaching laboratories may also be assessed using a structured observation checklist. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire focusing on students’ experiences, frequency of use, perceived educational value, accessibility, and usefulness of different specimen types. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of educational value across different types of anatomical specimens and collections. Specimens that are well preserved, clearly identifiable, sufficiently diverse, and easily accessible may be perceived as particularly useful for practical learning. Students may report greater value in collections that provide opportunities to observe anatomical variations, structural relationships, and three-dimensional arrangements, while limitations in specimen condition, accessibility, quantity, or diversity may reduce their educational usefulness. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, laboratory managers, curriculum developers, institutional administrators, and other stakeholders involved in practical anatomy education. The study may provide useful information for evaluating the strengths and limitations of existing anatomical specimen collections and may support decisions concerning specimen acquisition, preservation, organization, accessibility, and instructional use. The findings may also encourage more purposeful integration of specimen collections into practical demonstrations, revision activities, and independent anatomy learning. The study will conclude by documenting the educational value of anatomical specimen collections and identifying factors that influence their usefulness in anatomy education. It is recommended that institutions should maintain diverse, well-preserved, accessible, and appropriately organized specimen collections and integrate them systematically into practical anatomy teaching. Further studies involving multiple institutions and larger student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on the educational contribution of anatomical specimen collections.
