Assessment of the Relationship Between Anatomical Visualization Skills and Practical Performance

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between anatomical visualization skills and practical performance among undergraduate students, with emphasis on how the ability to mentally visualize, interpret, and understand anatomical structures may influence performance during practical anatomy activities. Anatomical visualization involves the ability to form and manipulate mental representations of structures, their positions, orientations, and spatial relationships. This skill is important in practical anatomy because students are often required to recognize structures from different viewpoints and relate two-dimensional representations to their three-dimensional anatomical arrangement. The study will assess the anatomical visualization skills of the students and determine their practical anatomy performance based on their ability to identify, interpret, and relate anatomical structures during practical activities. The specific objectives will include assessing students’ anatomical visualization skills, determining their practical performance, examining performance across selected anatomical tasks, and determining the relationship between anatomical visualization skills and practical performance among the study participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Anatomical visualization skills will be assessed using standardized tasks involving anatomical diagrams, models, sectional images, three-dimensional representations, and spatial interpretation activities, while practical performance will be assessed through standardized identification and interpretation tasks involving appropriate anatomical specimens, models, prosections, or other practical materials. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation or inferential test will be applied to determine the relationship between anatomical visualization skills and practical performance. The study is expected to reveal variations in anatomical visualization skills and practical performance among the students. Students with stronger visualization skills may demonstrate better performance in identifying anatomical structures, interpreting different anatomical views, recognizing spatial relationships, and understanding complex three-dimensional arrangements. Greater difficulty may be observed in practical tasks involving small, closely related, deeply located, or unfamiliar structures and views. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, practical instructors, medical educators, and curriculum developers by providing information on the contribution of visualization skills to practical anatomy performance. The findings may support the use of three-dimensional anatomical models, interactive digital resources, sectional images, guided visualization exercises, and practical identification activities to strengthen students’ understanding and application of anatomical structures. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between anatomical visualization skills and practical performance among the study population. It is recommended that anatomy education should provide students with structured opportunities to develop visualization skills alongside conventional practical instruction. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations may be conducted to provide broader evidence on the role of anatomical visualization in practical anatomy learning and performance.
