Assessment of the Relationship Between Spatial Reasoning Ability and Anatomy Learning
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between spatial reasoning ability and anatomy learning among undergraduate students, with emphasis on how the ability to mentally visualize, manipulate, and understand objects and their positions in space may influence students’ understanding of anatomical structures. Anatomy involves the interpretation of three-dimensional structures, relative positions, orientations, and spatial relationships, making spatial reasoning an important cognitive skill in anatomical learning. Understanding this relationship may provide useful information for improving approaches to anatomy education and learning. The study will assess the spatial reasoning ability of the students and determine their level of anatomy learning based on their understanding and identification of anatomical structures. The specific objectives will include assessing students’ spatial reasoning ability, determining their anatomy learning performance, examining differences in performance across selected anatomical tasks, and determining the relationship between spatial reasoning ability and anatomy learning among the study participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Spatial reasoning ability will be assessed using standardized spatial reasoning tasks involving mental rotation, spatial visualization, and interpretation of three-dimensional relationships, while anatomy learning will be assessed using appropriate anatomy tests involving identification, orientation, and understanding of anatomical structures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation or inferential test will be applied to determine the relationship between spatial reasoning ability and anatomy learning. The study is expected to reveal variations in spatial reasoning ability and anatomy learning performance among the students. Students with stronger spatial reasoning ability may demonstrate better performance in tasks involving three-dimensional visualization, anatomical orientation, structural relationships, and interpretation of complex anatomical views. However, differences may also occur across specific anatomical regions and learning tasks, particularly where structures have complicated spatial arrangements or are presented from unfamiliar perspectives. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum developers, and other professionals involved in health sciences education. The study may provide information that can support the incorporation of spatial visualization activities, three-dimensional anatomical models, interactive learning resources, and practical exercises into anatomy teaching. It may also help educators identify students who require additional support in developing spatial skills relevant to anatomical learning. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between spatial reasoning ability and anatomy learning among the study population. It is recommended that anatomy education should provide students with opportunities to develop spatial visualization and three-dimensional reasoning skills alongside conventional learning approaches. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations may be conducted to provide additional evidence on the contribution of spatial reasoning to anatomy learning.
