Bilateral Differences in Elbow Range of Motion Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines bilateral differences in elbow range of motion among undergraduate students. The elbow joint is an important component of the upper limb that facilitates movements required for daily activities, academic tasks, and physical performance. Assessment of elbow range of motion on both sides of the body may provide useful information on normal bilateral variation and functional characteristics of the upper limb among young adults. The study will specifically determine the range of motion of the right and left elbow joints among undergraduate students and assess the extent of bilateral differences in selected elbow movements. Elbow flexion and extension will be evaluated using standardized anatomical and goniometric procedures. The study will also compare the measurements obtained from both limbs to determine whether measurable differences exist between the right and left elbows. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and relevant demographic information will be obtained. Elbow range of motion will be measured bilaterally using a suitable goniometer and standardized anatomical landmarks while participants are positioned appropriately for each movement. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate paired statistical test will be used to compare the right and left elbow measurements. The study is expected to reveal the distribution of elbow range of motion among the participants and identify the extent of bilateral variation in elbow flexion and extension. The findings are expected to indicate whether meaningful differences exist between the right and left elbows within the study population. Such findings may provide useful information on normal bilateral variation without assuming that one side is necessarily functionally superior to the other. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, sports scientists, orthopaedic professionals, and researchers interested in upper limb anatomy and joint mobility. The study may provide baseline information for understanding normal elbow movement and bilateral variation and may also support the assessment of individuals in clinical, rehabilitation, and physical performance settings. The study will conclude by describing the observed bilateral differences in elbow range of motion among undergraduate students. It is expected to recommend standardized goniometric procedures for assessing elbow mobility and encourage further studies involving larger and more diverse populations to establish broader reference information on bilateral elbow range of motion.
