Bilateral Variation in Foramen Lacerum Morphology Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines bilateral variation in foramen lacerum morphology among young adults, with emphasis on differences between the right and left sides of the cranial base. The foramen lacerum is an irregular opening located at the junction of the sphenoid, temporal, and occipital bones and forms an important anatomical region of the central skull base. Although much of the foramen is occupied by cartilage during life, its morphology and surrounding bony configuration may vary between individuals and between the two sides. Understanding these variations is relevant to cranial base anatomy, radiological interpretation, and procedures involving adjacent neurovascular structures. The study aims to determine the morphological characteristics of the right and left foramen lacerum among young adults and assess the extent of bilateral variation. It will specifically evaluate selected morphological features of the foramen lacerum on both sides, compare the observed characteristics, and determine the frequency and pattern of right-sided, left-sided, and symmetrical morphological presentations. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be employed for the study. Appropriate sampling procedures will be used to select eligible young adults, while the morphology of the foramen lacerum will be assessed using suitable imaging-based or osteological methods and standardized anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations where applicable. Appropriate paired and categorical statistical tests will be used to assess bilateral differences and determine the significance of observed variations. The study is expected to reveal measurable bilateral variation in the morphology of the foramen lacerum among the participants. Differences may be observed in selected dimensions, shape, margins, and surrounding anatomical relationships between the right and left sides. The findings are expected to provide additional information on normal anatomical asymmetry and individual variation within the central cranial base. The findings are expected to be useful to anatomists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, maxillofacial surgeons, and forensic practitioners involved in the assessment of the cranial base. The documented morphological patterns may provide useful reference information for interpretation of skull-base imaging, anatomical identification, surgical planning, and further research involving the sphenoid, temporal, and occipital bones. The study will conclude by documenting the pattern and extent of bilateral variation in foramen lacerum morphology among young adults. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures be adopted in studies of the foramen lacerum and that further investigations involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader reference data on its bilateral morphological characteristics.
