Bilateral Variation in Mandibular Foramen Location Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines bilateral variation in the location of the mandibular foramen among young adults, with emphasis on differences between the right and left sides of the mandible. The mandibular foramen is an important anatomical opening located on the medial surface of the mandibular ramus and provides passage for the inferior alveolar nerve and associated vessels. Its location is clinically relevant because variations in its position may influence the effectiveness of inferior alveolar nerve blocks and the safety of dental, maxillofacial, and mandibular surgical procedures. The study will aim to determine the location of the mandibular foramen on the right and left sides of the mandible among young adults. It will assess the position of the foramen in relation to standardized anatomical landmarks and compare corresponding measurements between both sides. The study will also document the extent of bilateral variation and identify the frequency of symmetrical and asymmetrical patterns of mandibular foramen location. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Young adults who meet the established inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The location of the mandibular foramen will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and suitable imaging or osteological measurement procedures. Measurements obtained from the right and left sides will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired statistical techniques will be used to determine significant bilateral differences. The study is expected to reveal variations in the location of the mandibular foramen between the right and left sides among the participants. Some participants may demonstrate relatively symmetrical positioning, while others may show measurable bilateral differences in relation to selected mandibular landmarks. The findings are expected to provide information on the extent of anatomical asymmetry in mandibular foramen location within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in procedures around the mandibular ramus. Information on bilateral variation in mandibular foramen location may assist in improving anatomical localization, planning inferior alveolar nerve blocks, and reducing the risk of injury to the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle during mandibular procedures. The study may also contribute to anatomical education and future research on mandibular morphology. The study will conclude by providing information on bilateral variation in the location of the mandibular foramen among young adults. It will recommend consideration of individual and side-to-side anatomical differences when assessing the mandibular foramen for clinical and surgical procedures. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations and standardized imaging or osteological techniques will also be recommended to provide broader reference data on bilateral mandibular foramen variation.
