Bilateral Variation in Plantaris Muscle Morphology Among Young Adults
Abstract
The study examines bilateral variation in plantaris muscle morphology among young adults, with emphasis on differences between the right and left plantaris muscles in terms of their size, shape, length, fiber arrangement, tendon configuration, and general anatomical characteristics. The plantaris is a small muscle located in the posterior compartment of the leg and contributes to movements of the knee and ankle. Its long tendon and variable morphology have also made it relevant in reconstructive and surgical procedures. Knowledge of bilateral variation in its morphology is therefore important for understanding normal lower limb anatomy and supporting clinical assessment. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the plantaris muscle on both sides among young adults using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include determining selected dimensions of the right and left plantaris muscles, identifying differences in muscle shape and fiber arrangement, documenting variations in the length and configuration of the plantaris tendon, and comparing the morphological characteristics between the corresponding sides. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while the plantaris muscles will be evaluated using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or anatomical examination procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired statistical tests will be applied to determine whether observed differences between the right and left sides are statistically significant. The study is expected to reveal bilateral differences in selected morphological characteristics of the plantaris muscle among the participants. Variations may be observed in muscle length, thickness, shape, fiber arrangement, and tendon configuration, with some measurements potentially showing statistically significant differences between the right and left sides. The findings are expected to demonstrate that bilateral symmetry may not be uniform across all morphological characteristics of the plantaris muscle. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, sports medicine practitioners, radiologists, rehabilitation specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the lower limb. The study may provide useful reference information for interpreting musculoskeletal imaging, understanding bilateral differences in plantaris muscle anatomy, selecting suitable tendon grafts where applicable, and supporting clinical procedures involving the posterior leg and ankle. The study will conclude by documenting the bilateral morphological variation of the plantaris muscle among young adults. It is recommended that right-left differences in plantaris muscle morphology be considered during anatomical, radiological, and clinical assessment of the lower limb, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on plantaris muscle morphology.
