Bilateral Variation in Suprascapular Notch Morphology Among Young Adults

Abstract

The suprascapular notch is an important anatomical feature located along the superior border of the scapula and provides a passageway for the suprascapular nerve and associated vessels. Its morphology may vary in shape, size, depth, and width among individuals and between the right and left sides of the body. Bilateral differences in the morphology of the suprascapular notch may be relevant to the anatomical understanding of the shoulder region and the relationship of the notch to the suprascapular nerve. The study will therefore investigate bilateral variation in suprascapular notch morphology among young adults. The study will identify and classify the morphological patterns of the suprascapular notch on the right and left sides and determine the relevant dimensions of the notch. It will also compare notch shape, width, depth, and other selected morphometric characteristics between the two sides. The study will further determine the frequency and distribution of the observed morphological patterns and establish the extent of bilateral variation among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Young adults will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and the right and left scapulae will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures. Morphological characteristics and dimensions of the suprascapular notch will be obtained through appropriate osteological or imaging-based assessment methods, depending on the study setting and available materials. The data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired statistical tests will be used to compare measurements between the right and left sides. The study is expected to reveal variations in suprascapular notch morphology between the right and left sides among the young adults studied.
