Bilateral Variation in Tibial Tuberosity Morphology Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The tibial tuberosity is a prominent anatomical feature located on the anterior surface of the proximal tibia and serves as the attachment site for the patellar ligament. Its morphology may vary among individuals and between the right and left sides in terms of shape, size, orientation, and dimensions. Understanding these bilateral variations is relevant to knee biomechanics, assessment of proximal tibial anatomy, radiological interpretation, and orthopaedic procedures involving the knee. The study will assess bilateral variation in the morphology of the tibial tuberosity among undergraduate students. It will specifically determine selected morphological characteristics and dimensions of the right and left tibial tuberosities and compare the observed measurements to identify patterns of bilateral variation among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The morphology and selected dimensions of the right and left tibial tuberosities will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures, with appropriate imaging or osteological assessment where necessary. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired statistical tests will be applied to determine significant differences between the right and left sides. The study is expected to reveal observable bilateral differences in selected morphological characteristics and dimensions of the tibial tuberosity among the participants. Variations may be observed in parameters such as tuberosity height, breadth, length, and orientation between the right and left sides. The findings are expected to provide useful anatomical information on the extent of bilateral variation in this important proximal tibial structure. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of knee-related conditions. The information may contribute to improved interpretation of radiological findings, understanding of proximal tibial anatomy, surgical planning, assessment of patellar ligament attachment, and management of injuries involving the tibial tuberosity. The study will conclude by documenting the pattern of bilateral morphological variation in the tibial tuberosity among undergraduate students. It is expected that the findings will contribute to anatomical reference data and provide a basis for further studies involving larger and more diverse populations to improve understanding of bilateral differences in proximal tibial morphology.
