Comparative Study of Thoracic and Abdominal Breathing Patterns Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the comparative patterns of thoracic and abdominal breathing among young adults, with emphasis on the observable contribution of the thoracic and abdominal regions during normal respiration. Breathing involves coordinated movements of the diaphragm, intercostal muscles, thoracic cage, and abdominal structures, with variations in the predominant movement pattern occurring among individuals. Understanding these patterns is important for appreciating normal respiratory mechanics and the functional relationship between the muscles and structures involved in breathing. The study will compare thoracic and abdominal breathing patterns among young adults under standardized resting conditions. The specific objectives will include identifying the predominant breathing pattern among the participants, assessing thoracic and abdominal movements during respiration, comparing the extent of movement between the two regions, and determining whether differences in breathing patterns exist among the study participants. Respiratory movements will be observed and measured using appropriate non-invasive assessment procedures and standardized anatomical landmarks. A comparative cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Young adult participants will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assessed under controlled resting conditions. Data will be collected through observation and measurement of thoracic and abdominal respiratory excursions using appropriate standardized procedures. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative statistical tests will be applied to determine whether observed differences between thoracic and abdominal breathing patterns are statistically significant. The study is expected to reveal variations in the relative contribution of thoracic and abdominal movements during normal breathing among young adults. Some participants may demonstrate greater thoracic movement, while others may show more pronounced abdominal movement, with some displaying relatively balanced movement between both regions. Differences in respiratory movement may also be observed according to the individual characteristics and normal breathing patterns of the participants. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, clinical practitioners, and students of anatomy and related health sciences by providing information on normal patterns of respiratory movement among young adults. The study may improve understanding of the functional roles of the thoracic cage, intercostal muscles, diaphragm, and abdominal structures during respiration. It may also provide useful reference information for practical anatomy teaching and the basic assessment of respiratory movement. The study will conclude by comparing thoracic and abdominal breathing patterns among the study population and documenting the observed differences in respiratory movement. It is recommended that standardized procedures and anatomical landmarks be used when assessing thoracic and abdominal respiratory excursions. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations and different physiological conditions are recommended to provide broader information on normal respiratory movement patterns.
