Correlation Between Femoral Length and Hip Range of Motion Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the correlation between femoral length and hip range of motion among undergraduate students. The femur is the longest bone in the human body and contributes substantially to the structural dimensions of the lower limb, while the hip joint provides a wide range of movements necessary for posture, locomotion, and functional activities. Understanding the relationship between femoral length and hip mobility may provide useful information on anatomical variation and functional movement among young adults. The study will determine femoral length using appropriate standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures suitable for living participants. Hip range of motion will also be assessed through standardized procedures covering relevant movements of the hip joint. The study will focus on determining the extent of variation in femoral length and hip mobility and examining whether measurable associations exist between these characteristics. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Femoral length will be assessed using suitable anthropometric techniques based on standardized external anatomical landmarks, while hip range of motion will be measured using appropriate goniometric procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be used to determine the relationship between femoral length and hip range of motion. The study is expected to reveal variations in femoral length and hip range of motion among the undergraduate students. It is also expected to determine the strength and direction of any significant association between femoral length and selected measures of hip mobility. The findings will provide information on the relationship between lower limb structural dimensions and hip movement without implying that femoral length directly causes differences in range of motion. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, orthopaedic professionals, sports scientists, occupational therapists, physical educators, and researchers interested in lower limb morphology and joint mobility. The study may provide reference information on normal variation in femoral dimensions and hip movement and contribute to a better understanding of the anatomical factors associated with functional mobility among young adults. The study will conclude by highlighting the observed correlation between femoral length and hip range of motion among undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized anatomical landmarks and range-of-motion assessment procedures in studies involving lower limb morphology and mobility. Further research involving larger and more diverse populations will also be recommended to provide broader reference information on the relationship between femoral dimensions and hip function.
